community circus school
The Fekat Circus School is a bouncing and colourful place, located in the historical centre of Addis Ababa. Every day the compound vibrates with children and youngsters jumping, juggling, tumbling, and dancing. The main circus disciplines taught are acrobatics, aerial (tissue and hoop), balance acts (hand stand, ladder, rola-bola, walking globe, tire rope, slack line), Chinese pole, human pyramid and different juggling arts (balls, clubs, diabolo, hat, hula-hoop, rings, poas, etc.).
The classes are open to any interested child/youth aged 6-20, and offered free of charge every week day from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. The only requirement is that trainees be committed and regularly attend the classes. The most gifted trainees have the opportunity to show their talent during the quarterly performances organized inside the school compound for the surrounding community.
In previous years, the school has been run in the past with the financial support of Girotondo for Africa, the Diplomatic Spouses Group Ethiopia, and the Swiss Embassy. Today the school Project funded with the support of Otto per Mille of the Waldensian Church of Italy.
>Circus trainings offer a wide range of benefits for physical and psycho-social development. Beside relaxing, alleviating stress and improving gross and fine motor skills, they promote: teamwork + trust and cooperation + self-esteem and confidence + self-discipline and self-motivation + mental agility and concentration + logical thinking and problem-solving skills + sense of achievement, pride and perseverance + …
Fekat Circus members would like to widely spread the circus arts and enable many youngsters to blossom as they themselves did. This is why, in 2007, the circus’ trainers started working in private schools and several street children projects, and children’s institutions (juvenile prison, orphanages). With the years, they have gained in experience and enriched the trainings with games, dance and theatre.
training and exchange
In order to learn more about the different cultures around the world and share mutual experiences, Fekat Circus is always pleased to promote exchange programmes with artists and circus lovers from across the country. Artists and students various circus backgrounds are most welcome to both practice and perform together with our troupe. Even though we cannot offer any kind of financial support, we can provide cheap accommodation (a small bedroom) in our compound and an invaluable unique personal experience.
